The founders recognized the potential of Burnet Rd and were early adopters who helped kick start a slew of hip new places to dine and grab a drink north of 45th Street. The brick facade architecture had neighbors in Brentwood, Rosedale, Allandale neighborhoods vying to see what was about to open. Today PHP brews award winning frothy beverages constantly on seasonal rotation (with permanent original brews on tap) and also provide a wide selection of microbrews from around the country.
Highlights: Excellent home brews with picnic table style seating and a great place to catch the game with flat screen TV
Menu Faves: Pepperoni and Basil Pizza with Pint House Salad
There is a long list of things that makes Top Notch one of the coolest Burnet Road staples. It's a walk back in time w/ their drive-up ordering stations (don't worry, you can still dine inside), movie nights during the summer that broadcast on a vintage TV mural, their timeless recipes, the Hot Rod nights where classic cars line the parking lot....and oh yeah, Dazed and Confused filmed some legendary scenes there! The owner lives in Crestview and is a supporter of neighborhood events and Brentwood Elementary. Did I mention they now serve local brew?
Highlights: The kid’s meal is served in a classic Ford Fairlane cruiser
Menu Faves: Hamburgers are great, but seriously try the fish sandwich
Enchiladas Y Mas
That group of people you see standing along Anderson Lane on Friday nights…those are people waiting to get into Y Mas (the regulars know better than to call it by its full name). Don't expect a quiet family dinner here; this is a restaurant where families (entire families) get together, neighbors meet up and tables become friends. Order a margarita or beer while you wait and they'll take your word when you’re seated. The salsa has some kick to it, and I've never had a cold meal.
Highlights: You are sure to run into people you know
Menu Faves: Yes the enchiladas are good, but if someone will split combination fajitas I'm all in!
Thunderbird Cafe and Tap Room
An old gas station / car garage when I moved into the neighborhood in early 2002, Thunderbird has transformed itself from just coffee to a full dining experience. Many residents still start their morning off with their favorite coffee or espresso, Tacodeli Tacos (while they last) or a pastry to go. Now there is a lunch crowd that might pick up a fresh salad or sandwich made that morning. By late afternoon you'll see folks in conversation over one of the 20+ beers on tap while relaxing on the outside patio.
Highlights: My son loves walking over to split a muffin while Dad has his morning coffee…and the friendly staff
Menu Faves: Their coffee never disappoints
Located in The Triangle, where Guadalupe and Lamar merge together, Galaxy technically sits on the edge of Brentwood but is still a staple for many neighborhood residents. Locally owned, Galaxy focuses on health conscious ingredients, supports local suppliers and always provides a friendly staff. They accomplish a wide variety of menu options without sacrificing quality or taste. Order in line, self serve your drinks and enjoy the obsessively clean environment.
Highlights: A professional setting to meet clients but also a relaxed early Sunday morning environment with my family
Menu Faves: Currently the fish wrap w/ sweet potato fries (of course) and a Cowboy cookie to go
The secret has slowly leaked, and now the Little Deli has patrons from all over town coming to enjoy a pie under the giant oak tree outside (where today you can bring in your own wine or beer). Originally known for its killer sandwiches, when Tony purchased from the previous owner he installed pizza ovens and quickly expanded hours of operation. The added picnic benches out front accommodate the crowds who either call in orders and stay to eat or just show up for an evening family meal.
Highlights: The ability to walk to dinner and honestly have some of the best pizza in town.
Menu Faves: Pepperoni and Mushrooms with Greek Salad is a Friday night regular, but for lunch I always grab a Club Sandwich all the way.
